Candler School of Theology invites applications and nominations for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position that addresses fundamental issues of religion and human difference. This position, which will be made either at the level of tenure-eligible assistant professor or at the level of associate professor with tenure and will commence with the fall 2013 semester, is one of several new faculty appointments in the humanities made possible by support from the Mellon Foundation. These interdisciplinary appointments seek to bridge humanities-based inquiry with other disciplines by applying its traditional principles to new fields of study, through using new approaches to examine traditional areas of research, and by exporting principles of critical inquiry across the academy. Review of applications will begin on January 15, 2013.
Through this position, the Candler School of Theology seeks to promote scholarship on the ways in which religious traditions and communities engage dimensions of human diversity, including but not limited to race, gender, generation, ethnicity, disability, class, and sexual orientation. Candidates must have research programs that draw on the humanities to engage religion and religious phenomena from innovative perspectives (which may include analytical tools drawn from the social or natural sciences) in order to develop new insights on religion and human diversity. Methodological approaches may be comparative (i.e., history of religions), ethical, ethnographic, literary, phenomenological, philosophical, or theological.
This position is open to scholars from a variety of disciplines that represent the humanities, including African American studies, Latina/o studies, women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, art history, media studies, history, literature, philosophy, religion, and theology. Because the Candler School of Theology is a seminary of The United Methodist Church, applications from candidates with membership in churches in the Wesleyan tradition are especially encouraged.
The person appointed to this position will be committed to theological education, participate regularly in the School’s Contextual Education program, and offer courses that contribute to Candler’s M.Div., M.T.S., and Th.M. programs. The successful candidate will have a research and publication agenda that is appropriate for participation in the Ph.D. program offered by Emory’s Graduate Division of Religion and will also participate in Emory’s Interdisciplinary Humanities Collaborative, a University-wide group consisting of faculty, administrators, and graduate students, promoting new, interdisciplinary work in the humanities at Emory.
